The Joy of Giving

Certain lessons of life run in your veins, like blood. Mother always said, that by giving, you grow. So we ought not think about what we give away, just give. Help those who have to struggle for the things you are blessed with. Religiously, we would donate or give daan each year.

The ‘Joy of Giving’ week reminds me much of this one ritual that I’ve followed for years. Rations and other basic necessities of life are looked after during the many festive charities like Makar Sankranti, Holi, Dussehra, etc. But for the ‘Joy of Giving’ week, I donate books. These books go to a school library. Somehow, parting with my beloved dearies in this fashion pains my heart, but only a little.

Here’re my loves enriching other lives now.

  1. I buy and donate health and beauty items to my church. When there was a fire in an apartment complex a couple of months ago it was nice to know that my donations were given to the displaced tenants. It’s a great feeling to help someone!

  2. My idea of the joy of giving is for my hubby and I to exchange the joy of giving instead of buying each other Christmas presents…We are using the money we would have spent on each other to help a family in need…BJ, author, near a river…

  3. in my hay days, I helped monetarily, and now in my not so good period, I am compassionate with fellow sufferers and that the best I can do for them 🙂
I am sure to bounce back some day and start it all over again with more vigor.

  4. Wonderful donation Asha.. And I give to charity, clearing out my draws and cupboards regularly and filling bags with clothes I no longer use of fit… Sending warm wished and excellent Joy you are spreading.. ❤

  5. Beautiful. This is awesome. I have to be honest. I never gave it much thought. I love to do little things for others when I have the opportunity to do so. I love to give to others. I think it’s a wonderful idea to spread love and joy wherever you can.

  6. That’s soo sweet of you to give books to way of joy is to make other people smile and make them feel good about themselves and helping them.I don’t want people to get hurt because of me.

  7. You donated books ? Wow!! I find it hard to part with books though I have donated my son’s comics and storybooks to local orphanage. But when it comes to my own, I get possessive. You have inspired me!

    1. You have to believe me, Shaloo, It wasn’t easy. The first time, I gave away books, I came home and cried the whole night. It felt like I’d lost a loved one. But when the principal of the school met me next time, she told me how some of the kids were excited on reading Ruskin Bond, Lewis Carroll, E B White, etc. That changed it all for me.
