The Review:

I read this book because it was recommended by Goodreads basis the books I’ve read on writing. I picked it up also because my friend had a copy handy, which turned out to be a good decision, because purchasing this book wouldn’t have been very meaningful.

This non-fiction novel talks about those aspects of content writing that aim at making your content not just great and memorable, but also ensure results. The book is broken down into sections such as How to Write, Grammar Usage Rules, Best Practices for Creating Trustworthy Content, Content Tools, etc. The flow of the writing makes it easy to grasp the key points and memorize them. The author and content officer, Ann Handley, speaks at length about how good writing puts you and your brand apart from competition, and if done well, also garners desired results.

That said, the books falls flat if I have to weight the chunk of real important meat that would shape one’s writing. Apart from the fact that, she felt it important to repeatedly establish how content is king, there were no significant points or details provided to lift your writing to the next great level. That reminds me to inform my readers that the content shared herein is very basic and ground level, and perhaps, things you’ve already been practicing if you’re in the writing business for some years now.

‘Everybody Writes’ should really come with the tag – For Beginners, because it does shed light on some aspects that would do newbies good if adhered to. So, besides being told like a zillion times, how writing well is crucial, there wasn’t anything outstanding to tell me how to do just that. And that I guess was a great put down. Due to the repetitive nature of the narration, it tends to get draggy and boring in great chunks; which I feel, could’ve been easily avoided.

I recommend it you if you are new in writing, and want to get a hang of how the writing business works. But if you are a professional writer, it’d do you good to head straight to ‘On Writing’ by Stephen King or ‘Elements of Style’ by William Strunk. Those two gems, I cherish even after all these years.
